Crochet

Doilies are making a comeback! Lately I’ve been obsessing over them. But dammit, my eyesight is not so keen as it once was nor are my fingers so nimble. Working in cotton crochet thread with a small hook is becoming tedious. I found this wonderful imported mercerized cotton on Ebay in DK weight so I picked up a D hook and decided to have a go at making a doily on just a bit larger scale than thread would produce.

Pineapple Delight (sounds like dessert!) was easy to follow and really worked up nicely. I recommend this pattern even for advanced beginners. With the larger thread and hook it measures approximately 22 inches across. Pretty impressive, no? I'm pretty pleased at the outcome and despite the larger size it still has a delicate look.

Then I went on to make the Square Pineapple Doily, which despite its deceptively simple appearance was more challenging than the previous doily. I struggled due to two mistakes within the pattern. If you attempt this just be aware that when it appears the chain count or stitch count seems wrong, it is. Follow your sequence.

I made this one for my twin sister who love, love, loves pink! I used the same cotton and hook as the previous doily but decided to try dying it with Kool-aid. I mixed about 3 cups hot water, 2 packages of pink lemonade Kool-aid and one pack of strawberry together in my pan. After dissolving the kool-aid in hot water I added my doily. Once the water began to boil I covered the pan with a lid and stirred from time to time to keep the doily completely immersed. For a darker pink leave soak overnight. I chose to remove this doily after a couple of hours because I didn't want it to get too dark. Once it was ready I rinsed with cold water until the water ran clear and then laid it flat to dry. My sis has pale pink sheer curtains in her kitchen and I wanted it to match. Here's the before and after. I hope she likes it!
